With a landscape architecture degree, a Master's in horticulture, and more than 25 years of experience as a professional plantsman - including 18 as Director of Hermannshof Garden in Weinheim, Germany - Cassian Schmidt is a designer, professor, author, and lecturer. His work uses natural plant communities as models for sustainable plant combinations in urban environments and private gardens. He is developing habitat-based low maintenance perennial planting mixes and effective maintenance concepts based on ecological strategies. 

In the 1980s, as a young gardener, he worked for several years for Countess von Zeppelin's famous perennial nursery, which is where he first met Beth Chatto. He also trained at Kurt Bluemel's perennial nursery in Maryland, US.
